Hours ahead of the agreed-upon embargo for the news, the Wall Street Journal is the first to report on Call of Duty Elite, the long-reported "digital platform" in development at Activision's new Beachhead studio. Designed to complement this fall's Modern Warfare 3, Elite will be a paid service though "portions of the service will be free" including a Facebook-inspired Groups feature.
Other features of the service include the Bungie Pro-like ability to display stats to analyze player performance, "gauging factors such as which weapons have been most successful for them in killing enemies." If you're worried that you'll suddenly have to pay for online multiplayer in Call of Duty titles, don't be. The Journal reports that "players will still be able to compete against each other online without subscribing to the service."
Activision hasn't yet pinned down a price point, though it does expect the cost to be less than comparable "online-entertainment services" like the $8/month Netflix. Part of that fee will go towards a "customer-service operation that will be needed to support it." It will also include the year's map packs, which cost $15 each, taking some of the sting out of any annual charge

Call Of Duty TV Series Exclusive To Elite Subscribers From the moment it was announced the Call of Duty Elite paid subscription service has had gamers curious how Activision can make a monthly rate worth it. We’ve gotten our hands on features like stat-tracking, social networking, and competitions boasting exclusive prizes. Now we’re hearing that Elite members will also have access to web TV series. "We have engaged some top Hollywood talent to create linear video content that will be exclusive to Elite members. That content is inspired by Call of Duty," Activision Publishing chief executive Eric Hirshberg told Guardian. Every publisher is interested in keeping brand awareness in full swing year round, and Activision has taken cues from sports broadcasting to deliver Call of Duty fans a drip feed to keep them hooked. "If you're a sports fan, there are lots of ways for you to connect with that hobby, that passion, not just on the day that the games are played, but throughout the week, and we wanted to give [gamers] real entertainment value,” he continued. It remains unknown whether the show will be live action or animated, but if they’re paying for top bill celebrities, Activision will probably want their faces in front of a camera. Elite launches as a beta test program this summer and goes live the same day as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, November 8

Since being announced earlier this week, there has continued to be some confusion (and outcry) over Call of Duty Elite. It's unclear what elements of the service you'll be paying for -- Activision isn't providing those details because much of it is tied into parts of Modern Warfare 3 it isn't ready to talk about -- but to help clear things up a bit, an FAQ has made its way onto the Web that explains how parts of it work, why it was announced now, and what will be free. It's frequently reiterated in the FAQ that nothing you've come to expect from a Call of Duty title is being removed. That includes multiplayer: playing online is still free, and as the FAQ puts it (in bold, underlined text, no less), "Even haters can play for free."
Everyone, Elite subscriber or not, will be able to purchase downloadable content just as you've been able to in previous games. If you do opt to pay the as-of-yet unannounced monthly fee, you'll get all of the "playable game DLC" for Modern Warfare 3 free of charge. That includes any map packs, though it's unclear if the way that's phrased -- "playable game DLC" -- means there might be some sort of non-playable DLC that even Elite subscribers will have to pay for, or if it's simply a strangely-worded statement. (It could simply mean things like avatars and themes for PSN and Xbox Live.) Another feature already announced for subscribers is a Call of Duty-themed web series.
Elite in and of itself will be a free service. Some people have claimed it's nothing special, saying that Bungie has been offering much of the same functionality for the Halo series with Bungie.net for years. Activision says Elite will be the "best free service on the market" because it offers "more features than any other service out there. Additionally, many of Elite's free features which will debut with Modern Warfare 3 are industry firsts and offer a new level of innovation."
Below is the list of features listed as being free to all users. More questions are answered in the FAQ (PDF). You can sign up for the Elite beta, which will take place this summer using Black Ops, here.

They are doing a beta for Elite if anyone is interested. Go to www.callofduty.com/elite to sign up, then if you are selected to participate they will send you an email with all the info. I think I saw this on the dashboard or something. May be worth looking into, idk.
